What is The Night Agent about?

The Night Agent Novel by Matthew Quirk

The Night Agent is based on the book of the same name by Matthew Quirk. However, the series, which was developed by The Shield and S.W.A.T. creator Shawn Ryan, mic drop as both are fantastic shows especially for action-thriller fans, this show has taken some creative liberties that diverge from the plot of the novel as most shows adapted from novels do.

Peter Sutherland, Rose Larkin, Agent Chelsea

In the series it mainly features a low-level FBI agent ( Peter Sutherland) who is working in the White House dingy underground room and he answers a call on the Night Action phone that never rings but when it does one night, it places him directly in the center of a far-reaching political conspiracy. When Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) is on the run from the assassins who killed her aunt and uncle, she is just lucky to escape by a hair length of being shot, so naturally the hunky brood Peter is tasked with her protection.

Ellen and Dale/The News International

Together, they piece together the mystery of her aunt and uncle’s true identity as they already have a rapport with each other, having Peter been a guide to ensure Rose’s protection from seasoned assassins ( Eve Harlow as Ellen and Phoenix Raei as Dale) and what they knew about the metro bombing, and Hong Chau rules the screen in the series as a pivotal character, Diane Farr who is the President’s chief of staff ( watch the trailer for clues) and how it connects to Peter.

The series also incorporates a parallel story involving the Secret Service agents ( Fola Evans-Akingbola starring as Agent Chelsea and D.B. Woodside stars as Erik Monks) as if it isn’t predictable, they are tasked with protecting the Vice President’s daughter in college. While seemingly disconnected from Peter and Rose’s story, the Secret Service agents and the Vice President’s daughter soon become integral in the untangling of the truth behind the metro bombing and their stories coverge in a crecendo.

Here’s the official synopsis via Netflix:

Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent is a sophisticated, character-based, action-thriller centering on a low level FBI Agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings — until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office.

Is The Night Agent worth watching?

If you’re a prospective watcher and wondering whether The Night Agent is worth getting invested in, here’s what you need to know about pressing play and binging the whole series. Since the series has already been renewed for a second season, you don’t have to worry about watching the show under the risk of cancellation. No one hates a show more when the show gets cancelled before its expected to close its story. Another season has been confirmed to be on the way.

Likewise, the series has been receiving mostly positive reception from critics and audiences alike, leading to the following Rotten Tomatoes scores: 74% from critics and 81% from the audience. Of course, in standing fashion, the audience approval rating is higher than the critics. Like with any show, it won’t be for everyone, but it’s clearly worth checking out since the series racked up over 168 million viewing hours in its first four days of release. Who doesn’t like a Bodyguardesque action-thriller.

The Night Agent might not be at the same level of certain Emmy-winning series, but it’s a super-fun, action-packed thriller that will have you entertained for 10 episodes. It very well could be one of the best Netflix shows of the year. If that sounds like something you’d like on your watch list, then it’s definitely a Netflix show worth watching. Just watch the trailer and you will be convinced.
