The Netflix series Heartstopper is a new type of rom-com for everyone. The anti-euphoria ( an infamous show about sex, drugs, and rambunctious nakedness) but the common theme of mental health permeates through the story of Heartstopper. May is mental health awareness month and watching Heartstopper is a recommendation straight from my heart.

It's a show based on webcomic series written and illustrated by British author Alice Oseman. Heartstopper spins characters off from Alice Oseman’s debut graphic novel Solitaire. The show follows a group of tight-knit friends that everyone wants in their life. Especially me, connect with me virtually in the comment section. The main characters are Charlie and Nick, two British schoolboys who are young and navigating the hallways of high school. When the two meet, they instantly take a shine to each other and go from rugby teammates to good friends to something more.
The supporting characters Elle(Yasmin Finney), Isaac (Tobie Donovan)
Tao(William Gao), Tara(Corinna Brown), Darcy(Kizzy Edgell), and Imogen ( Rhea Norwood) construct a beautiful landscape that seems dreamy. The way that the supporting characters flourish, blossom, and create an atmosphere of love, support, and genuine care among their friend group is an experience that I have yet to witness for myself.
Alice Oseman has written the television adaptation series that follows a group of English teens wrestling with self-definition and queer identity. One thing that’s immediately very striking about Heartstopper – palpable even if you’re not familiar with the source material – is how much creative control Oseman had on the series. There’s a real clarity of adaptation here, offering probably one the most direct translations from page to screen ever; there’s no concession to any kind of Americanism to note an obvious example (they’re quite pointedly not at a US high school in west Wales), but even in more general terms, all of that gentle earnestness is filtered straight from the books. I am picking up all the graphic novels by Alice Oseman and giving them a read.
Heartstopper’s dulcet tone is addictive, to say the least, based on the four volumes of the graphic novel series, I expect at least three seasons of the show. Oseman aims for sincerity. Her characters approach familiar sets of problems with a nourishing level of care. They abandon cruelty for curiosity, restlessness for patience. The series opts for restraint and quiet humor, which gives its core lessons room to breathe. It’s a low-key viewing experience that stays with you long after the credits roll. My heart is not full just after watching each episode, I must watch all the heart-stopper videos on YouTube to give myself more of these beloved characters.
You can stream Heartstopper on Netflix right now. I have carefully not given any story or plot detail away in this review as I want you to experience it yourself for the very first time and leave your thoughts in the comment section down below.
