Never have I stayed awake past my bedtime to catch a live film screening of an Oscar-winning film. Accompanied on my quest to view a Wrap screening of CODA directed by Sian Heder who has become one of my favorite directors of all time. Sitting beside my 11-month-old labrador puppy, I started my viewing of the film that centers on the heart, and soul of what it means to be a supportive Rossi family in a place where a teen ( Emilia Jones) struggles to find her voice.
The aspect that resonated with me the most in the appreciation that it has received. With three-time Oscar-winning, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Bafta's, two Gotham Screen Actors Guild Awards, Writers Guild of America Award ( Best Adapted Screenplay) as well as an NAACP Image Award for Outside Independent Award and last but not the least a Satellite Award for Sian Heder, I hope the cast of the film is feeling gratified with their stellar performances in their authentic selves in an independent film that soared with its international success.
The film beautifully portrays a family of deaf adults who speak through their daughter who works as a translator and a bridge of understanding between the adults who happen to be born deaf and the hearing world. The cast and characters of the film are stellar both in performance and the layers and complexities that each of them portray onscreen constructing an on-screen family that resonates in the hearts and minds of the viewers of the film.
The streaming indie film has soared to the heights of success as it is the first small-scale streaming platform film that was released in theatres after winning multiple awards under its belt. The Sundance Film Festival got the ball rolling which propelled the Apple TV+ film to capture the world's attention.
The top-notch cast of this film that goes on to break barriers that the society has imposed on the deaf actors in Hollywood are :
Emilia Jones as Ruby Rossi
Troy Kotsur as Frank Rossi, Ruby's father
Marlee Matlin as Jackie Rossi, Ruby's mother
Daniel Durant as Leo Rossi, Ruby's brother
Eugenio Derbez as Bernardo "Mr. V" Villalobos, the high school choir director
Ferdia Walsh-Peelo as Miles, Ruby's love interest
Amy Forsyth as Gertie, Ruby's best friend
Kevin Chapman as Brady
