Never Have I Ever: Season 2 Poster

Never Have I Ever is rare sight on any streaming service as it dives into the authentic, non-stereotypical representation celebrating South-Asian women on the big screen and their supporting characters also belong to diverse backgrounds which is an all-around treat to experience in my lifetime.

[(my all-time favorite tv show that I have binged watched endlessly) and other prominent works include, Monsters at Work, other signingsions, and many more] is a force of nature who is behind this much-needed breath of fresh air celebrating her heritage and the cultural practices of 17.7% of the total world population ( 1,380,004,385 approx and multiplying every minute) on the big screen.

Mindy Kaling and her cast and crew have brought forward a stellar tv creation which has encouraged new talent on the big screen and the success of the show is proportionate as it is still in the top five most-watched shows on Netflix India. Furthermore, the record has been achieved within its debut week of Season 2 on 15th July, 2021 shattered the glass ceiling by being watched by a staggering 40 million households globally.

Devi (Daughter) & Mohan (Father)
Devi & Mohan

Devi played by first-timer ( I don't believe this) on the big screen by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and her father, Mohan played by Sendhil Ramamurthy.

Shocking, but I was elated to hear this as the coming of age story of an Indian-American teenager ( Devi: Maitreyi Ramakrishnan)

who is dealing with the death of her father ( Mohan: Sendhil Ramamurthy) has never been explored before on tv.

With a fresh concept and a refreshing take on processing grief, sisterhood ( Fabiola Torres: Lee Rodriguez & Eleanor Young: Ramona Young and new Indian bestie Aneesa: Megan Suri who portrays a complex character of the new girl with an eating disorder but goes beyond the veil of her symptoms)young love [Paxton Hall-Yoshida ( Darren Charles Barnet) & Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison ) love triangle drama for the ages], a therapist that everyone wants ( Dr. Ryan: Niecy Nash ), and much more.

Most importantly, there are well-rounded complex characters that uplift the show to new heights. A standout this season is the ever so radiant older cousin from India (Kamala: Richa Moorjani ). She is a character of beauty with brains who is getting her Ph.D. from CalTech as a biologist. Most importantly, she faces troubles known all too well to everyone in their work being male-dominated. But the stand out is the way she handles her way professionally and at times not so professionally, which is such a delight to watch as she stands up for herself and what she deserves.

Prashant played by Rushi Kota is the true embodiment of a supportive boyfriend who happens to be Indian but he does slip up at times when advising Kamala on how to deal with tricky work situations. Realistic portrayal as typically Indian Men can't be that woke but he at least he tries.

Dr. Nalini Vishwakumar is a typically Indian mother who thinks that her daughter should not be dating in High School but only engrossed in studying. A feeling all of us ( Indian teenagers out there)can relate all too well. A woman who is achieved new heights with her thriving dermatology career but also realizing that as a widow especially the society tends to be judgemental towards single mothers. (SPOILER) A moment that had me rolling on the floor was when Nalini returns to her hometown, where her parents try to set her up with a man who is so old he falls asleep on the couch while talking to her.

Season 1, where Ganesh Puja is showcased in a very memorable scene set against a typically Indian Aunty smackdown scene that is meme-worthy.

A very special character mention goes out to Rebecca Hall (Paxton's sister ) portrayed by Lily D. Moore. This character means more to the audience at large as for the first time, an actress with Down syndrome was portrayed as a thriving individual whose life didn't revolve around her differences.

Never Have I Ever is a must-watch Netflix Show for several reasons but most importantly because it celebrates authentic diverse representation on screen in a non-stereotypical way.
