My Weekend Getaway to Khas Village, Jaipur

Khas Village, Jaipur

The picturesque pet friendly property is located at a four hour drive from my residence which is convenient while travelling with a big dog such as Loki who is a two year old goldador( a hybrid dog breed that was created to combine the best of the Golden Retriever and the Labrador Retriever) who is on his third vacation with the family. The first two vacations were to Jim Corbett both times as the area has an array of dog friendly resorts to relax, recharge and rejuvenate.

Especially given that they is no cell or internet service expect the main lobby of the resort which is ideal for me as a digital overloader.

The Khas Village property is a luxurious space with a pool along with a diverse menu for meals but our family only opted for the breakfast inclusive package as the prices were exboriant and we wanted to consume local delicacies while in Jaipur. The traveling route is also extremely pleasant with a lot of shady parking spaces to stretch your legs and make sure to give your dog pee breaks and plenty of fresh water in between travelling long distance by car. Loki has a peculiar habit of only peeing in bushes and thank god some sparse bushes were present at the rest stops.

Here are some local delicacies that our family enjoyed which were lip smackingly delicious:

Ghevar(disc-shaped sweet cake)

Ghevar(disc-shaped sweet cake):

As we were passing by through the market to do some light shopping for the upcoming festivities, we stopped at Govindam Sweets which sells a variety of sweets and snacks, once such delectable sweet is Ghevar.

It is a disc-shaped sweet cake made with flour, ghee (clarified butter), and soaked in sugar syrup. It is generally topped with Rabri(is a classic North Indian treat that’s rich, creamy, and perfectly sweet) but it can be consumed as is as well. The scrumptious topping on the rich dessert is saffron, pistachios, almonds, cashews and edible rose petals. Heavenly indeed!

Jaipur style Lassi(Indian yogurt–based beverage with a smoothie-like consistency)

Jaipur style Lassi(Indian yogurt–based beverage with a smoothie-like consistency):

The rich, decadent and swoon worthy frothy lassi is carefully made from thick fresh yogurt which is mixed to achieve a rich consistency and its flavour profile is decadent and refreshing which contrasts with the crunchy shaved almonds, cashews and a saffron and milk slurry on top to increase its flavour impact. The experience is forever locked in the travel memory section of my brain, that’s for sure.

It is served in an earthen kulhad which is a terracotta glass to make sure the lassi is cool as well as it adds a earthy flavour increasing the distinct flavour profile of the drink.

Rajwada Handi

Rajwada Handi

This is a spicy( and I mean really spicy from a woman who loves thai chillies) , blow your socks off spicy instant overwhelming heat with a rich flavour of spices gravy made in desi ghee absorbed in soyabean chaaps( which are khebab like skewers made from soyabean).

The perfect accompaniment to this dish is a whole-wheat tandoori roti ( indian tortilla) charred in a tandoor oven topped with ghee and coriander and thinly sliced onion and green chutney is a must.

Lal Mass( Red Meat)

Lal Mass( Red Meat)

Lal maas is not a mere combination of meat and spices. The blend of red chillies with other masalas is key which is responsible for its rich flavour profile that is filling and leaves you wanting more with each bite.

The hero ingredient is the smoky Mathania chilli which gives this dish its popularity and rich sauce that envelops the succulent juicy well-done lamb that is heavenly with every bite.

Greyhound
Greyhound

The property has their own lean machine greyhound who was a lovely pet hungry for head scratches but Loki was a ferocious baby guarding his pack as he has identified that Simba was a hunter dog who could harm him or his pack, little did we know upon our departure, the hotel staff told us that Simba, the greyhound has killed pigeons, a peacock and a baby goat which belonged to the local caretakers of livestock near the property. Shockingly, greyhounds are bred for coursing, greyhound racing which is barbaric and hunting. Since the rise in large-scale adoption of retired racing Greyhounds, the breed has seen a resurgence in popularity as a family pet. The switch is wired into their DNA, the more you know.
